Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? Or is it? I’d like to argue why it’s not necessary for everyone.
What’s a normal American breakfast? Let’s look at a poll from ABC news. They say the top choice is cold cereal, followed by bacon and eggs. These are extremely different choices. The cereal is completely made of carbohydrates, and the bacon and eggs filled with good fats, protein, and no carbohydrates. Which one is better?
Have you ever stopped and thought, what is cereal? What are you actually eating? Look at the ingredients, the majority starts with high fructose corn syrup, sugar, or refined flour, and then the list goes on to a bunch of ingredients you can’t even pronounce. What are bacon and eggs? Eggs are laid by chickens, and bacon comes from the belly of a pig. That’s one ingredient each. Not 30. Eggs are eggs, bacon is pork, what is cereal, really?
Cereal, donuts, breakfast bars, leftover pizza, low fat and processed yogurt, milk, orange juice, bagels, biscuits, and pastries are all extremely high carbohydrate meals that are frequent breakfast foods. They all put your body into carbohydrate burning mode, instead of fat burning mode. That means you’re just burning your food, not your fat.
When you fast and skip breakfast, you’re basically having a high-fat meal. A high-fat meal of your own adipose (fat) tissue. That’s a good thing. Instead of constantly needing to be fed more carbs, your body can become adapted to burning fat.
Need one more reason? In the morning our bodies have a high level of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol increases our liver’s activity of creating glucose from non-carbohydrate material called gluconeogenesis. It is unlikely the cavemen had food available as soon as they woke up, which explains this adaptation. This adaptation allows us to not eat for hours but instead run off our body’s natural food store, fat.
It’s your choice about breakfast. If you truly are hungry eat something REAL and Paleo; if you’re not hungry I’d say skip it. But there’s no reason to ever start your day off with a high carbohydrate (SAD) meal.
