Dead week is wrapping up here in Baton Rouge. Dead week meaning the week before finals. This is also the time when my usual coffee shops are packed with “seasonals” (as I call them) and us regulars are stuck finding new locations! I usually love dead week because if you prepared enough during the semester, it’s all just review. I’ve had a few questions about how I can stay eating healthy during busy times, and my only answer is food prep. So here are some of the things I bought this past week to munch on!
I understand this doesn’t look like much, but some food isn’t pictures and I usually go to the grocery twice a week!
Let’s talk about some of these foods!
Berries: A favorite snack. I like to throw them on a salad or eat a few with any meal.
Eggs: I hard boil mine and eat 2-4 everyday. This is so easy to do, it’s inexpensive, and eggs are awesome for you.
Sweet potatoes: I made sweet potato soup with these last week!
Bananas: I love bananas with my breakfast.
Ground turkey: These were for turkey burgers.
Goat yogurt: I have been adding back in some goat yogurt. Buying the mini ones is expensive so that’s going to change soon.
Asparagus: I love fresh asparagus. I make my Asparagus Salad with them.
Spices: Garlic salt is awesome on broccoli. I like cumin for my grilled chicken and onions (little Mexican flare!).
Almond butter: I love this as a snack and put it in my smoothies or with apples! Tons of ways to eat this stuff.
Kombucha: Kombucha is a fermented probiotic tea. I sometimes crave this stuff badly, although it is expensive. I prefer it home-brewed from the Farmer’s Market but we don’t have it in the Baton Rouge Farmer’s Market.
Pizza Flax Snacks: These little chips are full of protein and super flavorful!
I eat tons of frozen broccoli (not pictured). A lot of my meat is from the farmer’s market, so I store it in the freezer. A couple of days before I need the meat, I take it out to thaw. This past week I found myself eating a lot of local pork sausage and some chicken!
