Should I do a cleanse? I recently did a 7 day Paleo-ish/Keto Cleanse, and I want to share with you what I learned. This food plan was created by Jenny Champion, RD. She encouraged me to try it out, and I am seriously happy I did. Read about what I learned from this cleanse.
I lost 4.5 lbs, in a week.
I had recently gained a few pounds on my surgery rotation, but they were stubborn pounds. I had not lost them for at least 2 months, and then boom I lost 4 lbs in a week. I attribute this to water weight, but also inflammation. Some of the foods I was eating before were obviously too processed and inflammatory. This was not even my intention in starting this cleanse but was definitely a huge benefit.
Your energy sky rockets when you eat super clean.
When you’re eating a certain way for weeks or months, your baseline energy level changes. It can be subtle, you want to nap more, going to exercise is a little harder or you don’t get as much done as you could. This is how I felt before this cleanse. I was feeling good, but not great. But honestly I couldn’t tell. I truly thought I was just exhausted from medical school. But by day 2 of this cleanse my energy was 10/10. I felt like I could stay up all night cleaning or cooking or doing God know’s what. This was HUGE for me. And a reason I’d do this cleanse again.
My taste buds heightened.
On day 4, I broke the “no fruit” rule. I had a one banana and a kombucha with 2g of sugar in it. I seriously felt like I was tasting the sweetest food ever. The sugar in even a banana tasted as sweet as ice cream to me. This goes to show how when we consume a ton of sugar, it not only tastes LESS sweet but it’s not as satisfying. I am definitely going to be conscious of how much sugar I’m consuming, and try to enjoy the sweet taste of fruits and even sweet potatoes again.
Cooking each meal is TOUGH.
I used to cook every meal for years, but I was in college and I was home for breakfast and dinner every day. In medical school my schedule is crazzzy, I never know how long I’ll be at the hospital and some days I’m there at 5 am. I was happy I was able to make it work out this week, but eating healthy is a serious time commitment and a priority. Give yourself a few hours on Sunday to plan out meals and find things you like to eat as leftovers! This is the key to all of it, or it won’t work.
So that’s the gist of it. Would I do this again? YES! Should you do it? Yes.
One of the huge benefits of the cleanse is a Facebook group where others are doing the cleanse. The Registered Dietitian (Jenny Champion) is constantly available for questions and support. Basically you’re paying for a personal dietitian with this cleanse, SO worth it!!
